Hike the Great Trail in Lac du Bonnet!

The Blue Water South Trail is the Lac du Bonnet portion of the Great Trail that runs from Pinawa Dam Provincial Heritage Park to Great Falls. At approximately 37km long, the trail provides many year-round activities to enjoy like hiking, swimming, paddling, snowshoeing, skiing, horseback riding and snowmobile trails.

Starting at the Pinawa Dam Provincial Heritage Park, the trail heads west along Pinawa Hill Road before heading northeast as it winds through the Lee River Wildlife Management Area. The trail crosses Tower Road, where it then continues north through another section of the Lee River Management Area, crosses PR 313 and heads towards Old Pointe Road. This section of the trail offers spectacular views of the boreal forest, granite outcroppings and black spruce and provides many opportunities for wildlife viewing, especially during dawn and dusk.

The Blue Water South Trail continues west along Old Pointe Road across the bridge on the pedestrian walkway and continues west on the north side of Highway 313 until it arrives at Blueberry Rock Drive. Just before the bridge, you’ll encounter Bridgeside Park, complete with a boat launch, parking lot, picnic tables, and washroom facilities, making this a great location to stop for a quick break.

From Blueberry Rock Drive, the trail heads north along the municipal road. This part of the trail winds through an era of Lac du Bonnet that was excavated for clay years ago. Continuing north, you’ll eventually wind up at Blueberry Rock Trail.

Blueberry Rock Trail is a spectacular place to spend some time. Favoured by locals and visitors alike, the trail is very scenic, with granite rock ridges and outcroppings. A Lookout Tower, the provides a view of the Winnipeg River, is located about halfway through the trail, where you will also find picnic tables and fire pits.

Continuing north on the Blue Water South Trail, you’ll cross Blueberry Rock Drive and follow Mackenzie Point Road, a short municipal road that will lead you to the Winnipeg River dike. This area of the trail is the perfect place for bike riding and horseback riding, as well as enjoying a hike along the Winnipeg River. The trail stays on the dike for approximately five kilometres before turning west at Crescent Bay Road to cross Highway 11, then turns north to continue along a hydro transmission road for about another five kilometres before it heads east to cross Highway 11 once again, arriving back on the dike. From here, the trail stays on the dike right into Great Falls, which is the northern boundary of the Blue Water South trail.

The Blue Water South Trail is managed by the wonderful volunteers of the Lac du Bonnet Trails Association.
